Famed Chinese celebrity and pop star Zhang Jie, also known as Jason Zhang, has been presented with the first ever International Artist Award at the 2014 American Music Awards at the Nokia Theatre in LA. The 42nd annual awards ceremony is the world’s largest fan voted award show, celebrating the best in pop, rock, rap/hip hop, soul, and country music.

“Hey AMAs! How you doing? I’m Jason Zhang from China,” he exclaimed as he was presented his award by well known musician Pitbull for International Artist Of The Year. Showing appreciation for American music and pop culture for being such an influence on his life, he gave special thanks to the late Michael Jackson, citing him significance as an artist on his own musical trajectory. He even sang a few lines of the chorus of ‘Heal the World’ to rapturous applause from the crowd.

Coming from humble origins in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, Jie rose to fame in China through televised singing competitions and quickly developed a faithful following. Not even 32 years of age, Zhang Jie has recorded 9 hit albums that have multi platinum sales and been awarded a slew of awards in his native China including Mnet Best Asian Artist in 2010. This is the first award Jie has received outside of Asia.
