Jessica Sanchez on Being the Next Idol Judge

Things may have been going bad for the TV show American Idol – with judges reshuffling almost every season, producers getting fired – but thankfully, the stroke of bad luck hasn’t been carried out by its alumni. Season 13 runner-up, Jessica Sanchez, has got lady luck smiling on her side, albeit losing the season to Philip Philips.

The 17-year-old Filipina-American singer was able to release an album called Me, You & The Music, booked a TV gig on the show Glee, modeled for a clothing brand, and is, basically, travelling around the world to perform. Quite known throughout the competition as the balladeer who gets to belt out Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and Luther Vandross’ “Dance with My Father” with little to no amount of critique from former judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman, Steven Tyler, Jessica’s carrier single “Tonight” is certainly a different side of the singer.

What could she say about switching gears? In an interview with Billboard, she states, “I just gotta show and prove myself to everybody that I’m not just the ‘balladeer.’ I like to do this kind of stuff. And that’s easy for me, because I’m pretty fierce at this stuff.” Supported by R&B star Ne-Yo, “Tonight” is a danceable track fit to be blasted out loud on the radio and clubs – pretty much how Jessica and Ne-Yo envisioned it. The music video shows both stars partying and dancing with the crowd in a club.

As for the news of former contestants taking over the judges’ chair on American Idol? Ryan Seacrest asked Jessica on his radio show if she’d be interested, and the singer agreed that it’d be a fun gig. She has a little bit of a hesitation though.

“I don’t know if I could ever criticize,” she reveals. “I have like a really soft heart, so it would be kind of hard. I’d be the annoying one that can’t say anything mean.”
