How Taylor Swift managed to change the fundraising policy of GoFundMe

Some people are in the press for all the wrong reasons, but those people aren’t Taylor Swift. After convincing Apple to pay artists and labels for free streams on its new music service, her latest gesture was so generous it forced crowd funding site GoFundMe to raise its donation limit.taylor-swift-donation

The international pop star recently tried to donate $50,000 to a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the medical expenses of a young girl (and Swift fan) named Naomi, who is currently battling leukemia. The trouble is that donation was too big for GoFundMe to handle. While GoFundMe doesn’t limit the amount any campaign can raise, there was previously a cap on individual donations of $15,000. GoFundMe quickly learned the Swift Principle –

But as GoFundMe CEO Rob Solomon says in a post on the company’s blog, “Taylor Swift’s donation was so generous that it required us to increase the donation limit on the platform. What Ms. Swift has done for Naomi and others can inspire the next generation of giving.” Including donations she’s made to other campaigns, Taylor Swift has now given more than anyone else in GoFundMe history.
