The former Fresh Prince has spoken about his musical ambitions in his first music related interview in the past 10 years.
Last week saw Will Smith’s return to microphone after more than a decade, as the Fresh Prince jumped aboard a remix of Bomba Estéreo’s “Fiesta” but it seems as though there may be more to come. The artist and actor looks to be planning a full blown comeback.
In an interview on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show, Smith told the announcer that he has already recorded 30 new songs and that there are “six or seven [tracks] that I really, really like, that I’m trying to get the ideas to come out right. I’m shaking the rust off, knocking the dust off.”
In between shooting Suicide Squad scenes, the former Fresh Prince has said that he’s been in the studio almost every day and dropped that there may be plans to embark on a world tour alongside longtime collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff. “I’m pretty certain I’m going on tour,” Smith said. “Jeff and I actually never have done a full tour. I was always on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, I was always either making a movie, so we’ve never actually done a full tour. So I’m looking this summer to be the first time that we go out on a full world tour.” Smith went on to say he’s “terrified” of the thought.
“I’m just trying to still find that voice; I have so many things that I wanna say. I’m struggling with saying them in a way that fits the flavour of music that I tend to like.”
Smith also described how he has enlisted a team of young artists and “philosophers” to help him on his musical journey, but touched on the fact that getting older does not hinder creativity, referencing Dr Dre and Run the Jewels: “I guess 40 is the new 30,” he said.
