Crush of the Day: How To Destroy Angels – ‘How Long’

by

How To Destroy Angels

If you were one of those surprised by Trent Reznor’s wedding with Mariqueen Maandig in 2009, and disappointed by his sudden career change from Nine Inch Nails to How To Destroy Angels – at best, a faded NIN with a female vocalist – welcome to the club! I’ve never been a hardcore groupie, but NIN has lulled my student years, with a peak seeing their live performance at festival Les Eurockéennes de Belfort in 2005. My half-mast interest in Reznor’s project went through the years, nevertheless making me notice his musical creations for movies The Social Network and The Girl With Dragon Tattoo. So when NPR for Music published an article announcing the first videoclip of How To Destroy Angels’ upcoming album, Welcome Oblivion, my curiosity was tackled. Have a look first:

How To Destroy Angels is Trent Reznor and Mariqueen Maandig, obviously, and sidekicks composer Atticus Ross and art director Rob Sheridan. They worked with British video collective Shynola, who produced this visually beautiful and peculiar video clip, showing a post-apocalyptic world where people only survive, and don’t really live as humans anymore. Some people tried to play this video with NIN songs, and it seems to work pretty well too – but we should keep in mind that HTDA is a different band. It’s true that Mariqueen Maandig’s voice is not that interesting, emotionless and prosaic. But I find that the chorus makes it all, giving a powerful shape to the song, and making me want for more. Welcome Oblivion will be out on March 5th, we’ll see if the band goes further in the music intensity that we crave/hope for. Until then, focus on the chorus and don’t be too scared.
