Crush of the Day: Phoenix – ‘Rally’

by

A jovial haze is looming the air after the madness that was Coachella. The Cali-fest has reignited the love I have for Parisian band, Phoenix and that love is well and truly in full bloom. Most notably for Thomas Mars and his accent, but I digress. The band received mass attention after an electrifying mash-up of their hit “1901” with a collection of R Kelly tracks. Whether you were singing along and swaying in unison with the crowd or watching Coachella’s live-stream on YouTube like me, let’s take a moment to bask in the beauty of Phoenix.

I was first introduced to the band through a mixtape which a friend of mine had lent me. It was one of the greatest things I had received from anyone. It was on constant repeat for weeks and if I were the type to sing in the shower, their songs would be top choice for a belt-out session. Listeners on the other side of the bathroom door would perhaps scratch their head in wonder, not only questioning my sanity but also wondering what the hell I was on about. Phoenix have a knack for writing lyrics with disjointed meaning. Not in a cryptic way, but in a way that I see as poetic ramblings and fanciful word-vomit.

If you haven’t ventured out and listened to my dearly beloveds, do yourself a favour. In the same way that my friend gave me Phoenix, this is my gift to you. Enjoy.
