Crush of the Day: Vance Joy – ‘From Afar’

Vance Joy has sold out every headline gig he’s ever played. While that number stands at just two, it is something to behold from an artist who is yet to release even an EP.

The gentle-natured Melbournian unassumingly uploaded his first song, “Riptide”, to Soundcloud in May this year with no photo, no bio and seemingly, no ego. Within a matter of weeks, the catchy ukulele-driven song had received nearly 1,000 plays. Fast forward to November, and “Riptide” has clocked up almost 5,000 plays on Soundcloud, over 12,000 on YouTube, and is featured in this Reid Cycles ad.

His second release, “From Afar”, is even more promising, featuring an emotional depth not seen in his first track. It’s a slow-burner with a bridge that will send shivers down your spine, even more so if you listen to its lyrics.

The mystery man in question is James Keogh, who cut his teeth singing at open mic nights around Melbourne for many years before finally recording his heartfelt originals. Sadly, fans won’t be able to get their hands on an EP until early 2013, but there is no doubt it will be worth the wait.
