Shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with in the Philippines’ hip-hop and rap scene at just 22 is rapper/emcee, Abra.
Pinoy hip-hop’s newest poster boy started out with the hip-hop group LDP (Lyrically Deranged Poets). He then took part of the Flip Top (whose YouTube channel is #1 in the Philippines) and Sunugan rap battle leagues where he rose above his competition, gaining a reputation that rightfully recognizes him as one of the heavyweights in Filipino rap battling. These experiences ultimately helped him hone his talent and skills on the art of rapping: his exceptional lyricism, extensive vocabulary, ingenious literary technique, speed and lucidity of delivery, and fiery stage presence that captured the attention of numerous fans and listeners.
Late last year, Abra released his hit song “Gayuma” which peaked at #1 on YouTube Philippines and garnered 2 million views on its first week. “Gayuma” is the Filipino term for a love potion, and the music video shows Abra going on dates and falling for someone while under the spell. Currently, it holds a staggering amount of 22 million views.
His follow-up, “Ilusyon” with Arci Munoz, has been released this month and is already enjoying a favorable amount of views. With an album set to come out this August and a solo concert on the works, we can only expect more people to fall under the spell of Abra’s wit and charm.
