The Top 5 Musical Collaborations of Coachella 2016

Day three of the first weekends of Coachella has come to a close and the festival’s 200,000 odd ticket holders have just walked away from one of the biggest lineups that the festival has put on to date. But the lineup on paper never tells the whole story, because, as we’ve come to expect, the A list performers pull in some serious support in the form of special guests across the festival.

So unless you were amongst those 200,000 odd folks that we mentioned earlier, here’s exactly what you missed:

Angus Young with Guns N’ Roses

Rumors began swirling that Axl Rose was to replace AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson on their world tour after he was diagnosed with ear damage that could result in permanent hearing loss two weeks ago. With this news finally confirmed yesterday, the newly reformed Guns’n’Roses returned the favour by inviting Angus Young on stage, uniform and all, to play Whole Lotta Rosie. Because if there’s one thing that makes a washed out reformed rock act look past their prime, its bringing on a 61 year old to shred on guitar and steal the show.

Lorde and Sam Smith with Disclosure

Riding high on the back of their latest chart topping album, brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence called in a couple of favours that saw them share the stage with some heavy hitters of the entertainment world. Kiwi songstree Lorde took to the stage for “Magnets” whilst Sam Smith joined for “Latch” and “Omen” in a blistering performance. The English duo are set to perform in Thailand for the first time ever next month as part of the Together Festival.

Kesha with Zedd

It hasn’t been a great year for Kesha. She’s been at war with her record label over sexual abuse allegations from producer Dr Luke and unable to release new material from the ongoing fallout but that doesn’t mean she can’t perform. After coming out in support of the singer, Zedd offered to produce a song for her and the culmination of that collaboration is True Colors… Watch in awe as she shines on stage, channeling Florence and the Machine’s soaring highs and emotive soundscape for the unreleased track.

NWA, Common and Snoop Dogg with Ice Cube

Bouyed by the phenomenal popularity of their epic biopic, Ice Cube had teased a reuinion on NWA prior to Coachella, and whilst it may not be in the studio, he almost pulled it off. With the notable absence of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube gathered the original members of NWA and pulled in some support in the form of Barbershop co-star Common and Snoop Dogg (who apparently rolled onto stage on a sparkly tricycle).

Rihanna with Calvin Harris

Hosts of the Coachella live stream had teased a “big superstar” would appear with Harris and frankly, we were figured it was going to be his girlfriend Taylor Swift, the unofficial queen of on stage collabs. Instead, RiRi joined the party for a flashback to their 2012 banger ‘We Found Love’ in this blockbuster cameo… But Taylor was never far away in the end after all…

I’ll NEVER forget this moment. @badgalriri @calvinharris #coachella
