Last night’s Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) Awards lived up to every ounce of hype that the Grammys-like awards evening had received and it was nothing short of eventful. Indonesia’s finest bands, artists and industry royalty celebrated AMI’s 16th year in awarding musical excellence.

The night was opened by X-Factor finalist Raja, Maia, Estianty Iza and Titi Rajo behind the drums for a collaborative effort of the song, “Money” popularised by Nicky Astria. And it was a fittingly energetic introduction to a night of acknowledgement and camaraderie.

The highly anticipated Lifetime Achievement Award went to the iconic Waljinah Diganjar. In her acceptance speech, the traditional singer said she was moved, delighted to be crowned and that she was so happy she could cry. Since the age of 16 Waljinah has contributed to over 40 years to Indonesia’s arts. However the night was just as much Noah’s night, having nabbed an astonishing six awards in the the categories of Best Pop Duo/Group, Best Pop Album by a Duo/Group, Urban Pop, Best Music, Best Production and Best Album.

Tantowi Yahya, Chairman of the AMI Awards, noted that the awards ceremony was to acknowledge all that had contributed to Indonesia’s music landscape, in particular Waljinah.
