Clockenflop 2016 announces new location and an unbelievable first round lineup

It may be six months away but Clockenflap has already served up a delicious first round of acts that is sure to get more than a few tongues wagging.

There is a single reason Clockenflap has cultivated a reputation as the pre-eminent music festival across all of Southeast Asia. Simply put, they consistently deliver a world class lineup of arts and music that punches well above its weight, and this year is no exception. If anything, the first round lineup is one of the strongest in recent memory and a delectable glimpse at what’s to come in future announcements.

Last year Clockenflap hosted over 60,000 fans with memorable performances from New Order, Nile Rodgers and Chic, The Libertines, a newly reformed Ride and A$AP Rocky. This year things look even more exciting, with the event moving to a brand new location at Central Harbourfront.

Without further ado, we present the first acts on the Clockenflap bill:

Sigur Ros

Iceland’s most revered musical export (sorry Bjork) create immersive soundscapes with their emotive, layered sounds and indescipherable lyrics (okay, it’s mainly Icelandic). Destroying your conception of the type of music that Vikings would make, the group have forged a passionate following since they formed in 1994. In a teaser about their upcoming tours of Europe and the United Stated the band said their tour dates would be “different, with new unreleased songs, a new show and maybe some other *new* things. Beyond that, we can only ask you to trust us on this one.” We have faith…

Continuing a long standing tradition of people from Oxford creating music that f**king rocks, Foals have matured into one of the biggest indie rock bands to come out of the UK in the past decade.

Regarded as one of the most impressive live acts in the UK, they’ve taken down a ton of accolades like the 2013 Q Award for Best Lie Act in 2013 and been nominated for the NME Award for Best Live Act… twice. These Foals are no one trick pony.

Pack your earplugs because these guys dont do quiet.

Cheer Chen

Popular Taiwanese singer-singwriter Cheer Chen will be gracing Clockenflap’s stage for the first time. Her ethereal voice and laidback tunes combined with Hong Kong’s iconic harbour view will make for an idyllic concert atmosphere.

Jose Gonzalez

With his crystal clear, lilting voice and deft guitarwork, folk hero (see what we did there?) Jose Gonzalez makes the kind of music that makes you wish you’d put more effort into music classes. Just as appropriate around a camp fire as on a stage, Sweden’s favorite son Gonzalez is not to be missed.

Fat Freddy’s Drop

Fat Freddy’s Drop have never been a band that fits into a conventional box. Their music morphs classical reggae with dub, soul, funk and hip-hop and it has found a receptive audience across the globe. Having played at Thailand’s Wonderfruit Festival in 2014, they return to Southeast Asia to show Hong Kong what the fuss is all about.

Crystal Castles

Their current composition may not be the original duo of Ethan Kath and Alice Glass but Crystal Castles are still producing music that is unmistakably theirs. Distorted synths, screeching vocals and live performances that are equally thrilling as abraisive. Expect a dancefloor that isn’t sure if they should dance or cower.

This is the first we’ve heard of this act… Like ever. We’re not going to pretend to be any sort of authority here. Either way we’re figuring they must be pretty chuffed to be on the lineup.
