Diplo: Crossing Taylor Swift Was “Biggest Mistake In My Career”; Goes On To Compare Fans To North Korean Army

Diplo, the 36 year old DJ, producer extraordinaire and one half of Major Lazer has never been one to shy away from controversy but messing with Taylor Swift and her fanatical fan base (again) could be his biggest mistake yet.

In an industry where image is carefully manipulated and artists are hyper aware of the consequences of every one of their words and actions, Diplo’s interviews have traditionally been refreshingly honest. He’s been quoted as having some brutally frank assessments of his time working with other recording artists like Beyoncé and M.I.A. He had this to say about working with the latter:

“For me, making this record wasn’t easy. In the past, we were a team. But Maya wanted to show us how much she didn’t need us. In the end, Maya is postmodern: She can’t really make music or art that well, but she’s better than anyone at putting crazy ideas into motion. She knows how to manipulate, how to withhold, how to get what she wants.”

His Twitter feed has been the source of more than a few ruffled feathers too with the artist taking aim at Daft Punk and members of Portishead in the past, but it was a public feud with Lorde in November 2014 over comments about Taylor Swift’s butt last year that really escalated things.

It was speculated that the mean spirited tweet was influenced by the fact that Diplo was dating Swift’s rival Katy Perry (whom it has been speculated that Swift’s song ‘Bad Blood’ is about) at the time. Whatever the motivations, Swift’s legion of fans went into attack mode and in a GQ feature he went on to talk about the aftermath of controversy:

“Like, Taylor Swift fans are really crazy. They threatened to murder me and stuff. It’s really bizarre, and disgusting. They’re the worst people in the world.”

If commenting on their idol’s butt didn’t enrage fans, then calling 40 million of Swift’s followers “the worst people on earth” certainly did. In discussing one gaffe, he made another, larger one. One month on, the the dust has somewhat settled but according to The Daily Mail, when Diplo was interviewed again by GQ Style he’s managed to cram his foot in his mouth again.

The Major Lazer producer compared the popstar’s fandom – who affectionately call themselves ‘Swifties’ – to that of the organized military forces of Kim Jong-un.

“It’s like an army that’s worse than North Korea, all I know is don’t ever get into a feud with Taylor Swift. She has like 50 million people that will die for her. You can’t step into that arena. That was something I was never prepared for … one of the biggest mistakes of my career was definitely f**king with her.”

Since their original spat Swift and Diplo have made amends at this year’s Grammys, evidenced by an adorable Instagram pic, but we’re guessing that Swift’s fans may need a little more time to recover after this latest barb.
