We reveal the Top 40 biggest selling singles of the decade so far

by

Official charts just released their official list of the 40 best selling singles of the decade so far, offering rare sales insight into the UK market. Though their data is based on sales data within the UK, the songs occupying the top spots have been smash hits across the globe. We take a quick look at what the world has been listening to over the past 5 yearstop-40-songs-of-the-decade

It probably comes as no shock to anyone that the biggest single since we ticked over to a new decade was Pharrell William’s super hit ‘Happy’. The record breaking track ascended to the number 1 spot in January 2014 and spent four non-consecutive weeks at the summit. Since being released, the song has sold a staggering 1,813,000 copies. The prolific musician managed to hold down three spots in the Top 40 Biggest Selling Singles of the decade so far, collaborating with Robin Thicke and T.I for blurred lines which takes second spot with 1,630,000 sales and French robo superproducers Daft Punk for Get Lucky, selling a respectable 1,436,000 copies.

Taking out the third spot is Adele with ‘Someone Like You’, which has sold more than 1.57 million copies and held the top spot for five weeks in 2011. The song comes from her album 21 which holds the distinction of being the best selling album of the decade and earned her the distinction of being the first female British solo singer in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 to have two number ones from the same album. The second single from the album ‘Rolling in the Deep’ also appears on the list at position 30.

Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera teamed up for the catchy dance pop anthem ‘Moves Like Jagger’ in 2011 which catapulted them to the top of the charts in 18 countries and sold 1,503,000 copies since its release.

The fifth spot belongs to previously unheralded Australian artist Gotye teaming up with New Zealander Kimbra for what became the surprise hit of the year in 2011. The indie pop ballad was recorded at Gotye’s parents house but managed to top the charts in 23 countries and earned him two Grammy Awards in the process. The song has so far sold 1,484,000 copies.

The rest of the charts is a who’s who of what’s been occupying the airwaves for the past fie years with mentions from Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars,Jessie J, who’s song “Flashlight”  is currently on the top of Music Weekly Asia Top 30 chart for Indonesia, Phillipines, Cambodia and Singapore.
