Vanilla Ice is still alive; crashes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 premiere

Vanilla Ice just burst into the premiere of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 with the original Ninja Turtles from Secret of the Ooze. And he rapped the “Go ninja, Go ninja, Go” rap. If you were trying to imagine a more 90s moment, we don’t know where you’d even begin.

Yes, in an exercise that can  surely only have been done to satisfy his own nostalgia, Vanilla Ice has rapped about ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ in front of a room of people there to watch turtles, surrounded by turtles from a previous decade. Make sense yet?

Otherwise know by his real name, Robert Van Winkle (which to us, sounds to us like the kind of name a second rate child’s entertainer advertising on Craig’slist would use) Vanilla Ice, burst into Madison Square Garden from behind the audience.I guess it has been a while since he’s seen a stage but this seems pretty rudimentary stuff.  Even with the mic in hand, he even needed to direct their attention towards him, presumably, because the assembled audience thought that security were soon going to eject the strange old man in a Team America track suit. He went on to garble his way through a rap where he seemed, at multiple points, to forget the lyrics, flanked by some turtles from the original franchise.

It wasn’t just to confuse a stadium filled with children that compelled Vanilla Ice to do go through with this publicity stunt though. It was a desperate, unending need for some sort of relevance, an itch that hasn’t been scratched in a couple of decades. Oh, and the cash… He definitely needs the cash.

The background is that Vanilla actually performed the Ninja Turtles rap back in 1991 during the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. That was just a year after his meteoric rise to fame on the back of his one, and only, hit Ice Ice Baby. What may be of more surprise to you, is that he’s actually been releasing music pretty consistently since then. Well, in between his reality TV show, the occasional movie cameo, oh, and getting arrested for burglary.

Glad to see he’s keeping busy.
