Watch the evolution of 30 years of Hip Hop in six minutes

Boston based rapper Alyssa Marie has managed to chronicle the most formative song of the past 30 years into a single track entitled ‘The Evolution Of Hip Hop.’

As the name alludes to, the track comprehensively documents the progress of the genre from 1984 through to the present day. There’s something for everyone from die hard hip hop fans to the occasional listener and across the course of 406 seconds there’s likely to be more than a few songs that you’ll know. Click below to check out the clip:

Opening proceedings, the video begins with a sample of critic Anthony Fantano – aka The Needle Drop – talking about the hip hop scene as a whole before Marie launches into the incredible six minute verse beginning with ‘Friends’ by Whodini. Sampling one beat from each year she rhymes her way through Beastie Boys, moves on to 90’s classics by Wu Tang Cla, Cypress Hill and Wu Tang clan, Documents the hip hop of the 2000’s with hits by Kanye West, Jay Z and Common before finishing with some of the best new talent of the current generation of hip hop artists in Joey Bada$$ and Kendrick Lamar.

Whilst purists may be disappointed that any history previous to 1984 has been excised and that hip hop legends Public Enemy and Grandmaster Flash didn’t make the list, the format of only having one track per year means that there is bound to be a few acts that didn’t make the cut. In any case, the rhyming skills of Marie complement the tracks beautifully and the video as a whole is a fun concept to check out.
