Charli XCX Has Transformed ‘Shake It Off’ Into a Punk Track

BBC Radio 1 has a long standing tradition of having visiting pop artists perform a cover of one of their contemporaries and has led to some amazing results like when 30 Seconds to Mars covered Kanye West or Haim covered Beyonce. Sometimes…. well sometimes they don’t turn out so well.

This time around Charli XCX, has delivered, offering up a fiery punk-ed up version of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.” With a band backing her she substituted the original version’s horns for a grinding bass line, aggressive guitar riffs, hand claps and Ramones esque ‘hey-hey-hey’ chants, making for a truly original take on the pop track. The high energy version is almost rapturous, and, true to the song’s lyrics, it makes you not want to stop moving. Check it out below:

At only 22 years old, Charli XCX has achieved more than her age would suggest – she wrote and is credited on Icona Pop’s “I Love It” and Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” which went to number 1 on the charts in the UK and U.S respectively.
Since then she’ gone on to forge her own career with a public persona as an edgier version of Katy Perry, who she is currently supporting across Europe for her Prismatic tour. In January she released her second LP, Sucker containing the hit singles “Boom Clap,” “Break The Rules” and her collaboration with Rita Ora “Doing It.”
