How Taufik Batisah turned a simple hashtag into a surprise smash hit

These days, there’s no telling where your next piece of inspiration is going to come from but in Taufik Batisah’s case, what started out as a video to his fans on Instagram quickly become an internet sensation. Back in June, whilst on his way to meet some fans to break fast during Ramadan, the Singapore Idol winner uploaded a video onto Instagram asking in jest where his fans were?

His fans response? A flood of parodies using the hashtag #awakkatemane (which is a colloquial way of saying ‘where are you?’ in Malay). The post went viral so Taufik Batisah did what any self respecting pop star would do. He made a song out of it.

#awakkatemane was debuted during a performance at Causeway Point as part of the launch of Batisah’s new album “Fique” and is rapidly becoming the  standout hit of the album. The track allows the silky smooth vocal style of Batisah to shine through and the R & B rhythm is instantly catchy. The video for the track was release in late October and in a little under a month the clip has been viewed more than 1,600,000 times, quickly becoming his most viewed clip ever and lighting up the charts across Asia.
